Legalization of Medical Marijuana in New Mexico

Medical Marijuana Doctors in New MexicoIn April 2007, New Mexico legalized medical marijuana when Governor Bill Richardson signed Senate Bill 523.

In 2007, the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act was voted in by the people of New Mexico. Governor Bill Richardson signed the Senate Bill 523 into law on APRIL 2, 2007, and it took effect on July 1, 2007. The purpose of the Act is to allow the beneficial use of medical cannabis in a regulated system, for alleviating symptoms caused by debilitating medical conditions and their medical treatments in New Mexico.


Quantity of Marijuana

Qualified medical marijuana patients are allowed to possess up to 6 ounces of usable marijuana (dried leaves and flowers), 4 mature marijuana plants and 12 marijuana seedlings. A primary caregiver may provide services to a maximum of 4 qualified patients under the Medical Cannabis Program. Qualified patients can only have more amounts of medical marijuana if authorized by their patients using a written document.


Treatment of Illnesses in New Mexico

State of New Mexico lists: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), cancer, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, hepatitis C infection currently receiving antiviral treatment, HIV/AIDS, Huntington’s Disease, hospice care, inclusion body myositis, inflammatory autoimmune or mediated arthritis, intractable nausea/vomiting, multiple sclerosis, damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord, painful peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, severe chronic pain, severe anorexia/cachexia,spasmodic torticollis, ulcerative colitis.


Licensing & Supply

Patients that have enrolled into the Medical Cannabis Program and received their medical cannabis card from the State of New Mexico, may register with the Healthy Education Society. The Healthy Education Society uses New Mexico’s premiere source for all medical marijuana products including; dried marijuana, marijuana edibles, marijuana clones and marijuana seeds. Non-profit entities can apply for a license to open dispensaries to sell and grow Medical Marijuana in New Mexico.
