Legalization of Medical Marijuana in New Jersey

Medical Marijuana Doctors in New JerseyOn January 18, 2010, New Jersey legalized medical marijuana when Governor Jon Corzine signed the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act. Maximum sentencing of 1 year in prison as a misdemeanor and a 1,000 dollar fine for possession of up to 50 grams.

The Senate Bill 119, approved on January 11, 2010, It was approved by House, 48-14, by Senate, 25-13. It was signed into law by Gov. Jon Corzine on January 18, 2010 and took effect 6 months after the enactment. Even after signing the Garden State’s Medical Marijuana program into law in 2010, implementation has been slow. The New Jersey Department of Health is committed to the effective implementation of the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act.

 

Quantity of Medical Marijuana in New Jersey

Qualifying patients are allowed to possess 2 ounces of dried marijuana per month. The New Jersey Medical Marijuana program forbids patients to cultivate their own marijuana in anyway. The New Jersey state plans to create up to 6 state-licensed “alternative treatment” centers.

 

Treatment of illnesses in New Jersey

State of New Jersey allows use of medical marijuana for the following conditions: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), multiple sclerosis, terminal cancer, muscular dystrophy, inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease, terminal illness, and if the physician has determined a prognosis of less than 12 months of life. The following conditions apply if conventional therapy is unsuccessful: Seizure disorder, including epilepsy; intractable skeletal muscular spasticity; glaucoma, if severe or chronic pain, severe nausea or vomiting, cachexia, or wasting syndrome results from the condition or treatment, HIV/AIDS, cancer.

 

License & Supply

For patients to qualify for medical marijuana, they must have a physician’s recommendation, a government issued ID and a proof of New Jersey residency to register. Patients are not allowed to grow their own marijuana but acquire it from alternative treatment centers. On Mar. 21, 2011, the New Jersey Department of Health announced the locations of 6 nonprofit alternative treatment centers from which medical marijuana may be obtained, five of which were operational as of Mar. 1, 2016.
